We’re feeling super excited here at Bueno Bike Lanzarote, Mick is on the starting list for Race Across Germany 2017!

The race travels 1,100km from Flensburg in North Germany to Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the Austrian border. There is 7,500 metres of climbing over the course of the race, so there’s a proper sufferfest in store for him! So far, there are 19 solo participants, many of whom have lots of ultra distance experience.

The race starts on Friday 30th June.

For all the up to the minute updates through out the race……Follow us on

Tiny Things at Bueno Bike Lanzarote #LifeofaBikeTourGuide – Vol.7

It’s the small things that set us apart!

New Year Resolutions #LifeOfaBikeTourGuide Vol.6

Here’s our list of the big ones

  1. Enroll and finish an Ultra distance bike race exceeding 2,000km
  2. Qualify for RAAM (Race Across America)
  3. Complete a 48hr climbing project on the bike. Target 30,000m of climbing in 48hrs.
  4. Abstain from alcohol (exception: to celebrate completing 1, 2 & 3 above)

We have lots of small things, the usual stuff…..less sugary drinks, less pizza, less chocolate, more fruit & vegetables, more sleep etc.

Call them general lifestyle improvements if you like #easierSAIDthanDONE

Is there a case for sports events that allow you to dope? Life of a bike tour guide Vol.4

It has been a really eventful few weeks in cycling, Sagan retains the Rainbow Jersey, controversy surrounds the points system for the world tour 2017, Brandon Semenuk wins again with Antoine Bizet pulling the first double back flip at the Red Bull Rampage……and Bradley Wiggins.

The fact is Bradley had permission to use a substance that in normal circumstances would be considered a doping violation. Should the questions be;

  • Was Bradley genuinely ill?
  • Did the doctor falsify or exaggerate his illness?
  • Was the treatment excessive for the symptoms he presented?
  • Should we have a panel of 3 doctors instead of 1 individual who authorises the use of TUE’s?

Has this been a case of a witch hunt that has gone slightly in the wrong direction? The bottom line is rules have not been broken and it is anybody’s opinion as to how far they have been bent.

Should the spotlight be turned up a little more on amateur cycling?

Lots of names over the last 2 years come to mind this week. Robin Townsend, Ciaran Kelly, Gabriel Evans, Kristjan Kumar, Oscar Tovar, Yamile Lugo, Andrew Hastings the list is endless.

All of these cyclists were found to be doping at amateur events. They include ex-continental riders, aspiring pro riders that were in the junior ranks and age-groupers. The entire spectrum is involved.

Have we assumed that being amateurs, they have less incentive to win and fewer reasons to cheat?

Unfortunately we are now in an age of escalating competition for amateur slots in big races such as the Ironman world championship. The fact of the matter is that you have people with money, access to performance enhancers and a type-A personality, and they want to win just as bad as professionals. Is it driven by ego and the desire to feel important?

The talk among many strong leisure cyclists is that they do not want to compete because they feel that it not a level playing field even at the lower levels of cycling. So we leave you with this……

Should we have a sport event where any form of doping is allowed? Let us know what you think.
